Tea is a very popular, stimulant & refreshing drink. It is the most common & the cheapest drink in the world.
Tea is generally grown in the hilly regions. It grows well under heavy rainfall & adequate sunshine on the hilly lands & slops where water does not stand. It grows in plenty in India, China, Japan, Indonesia & Bangladesh. In our country, it grows in the hilly areas of Sylhet & Chittagong division & Panchagarh district.
Tea seeds are at first sown in a nursery. The seedlings are then transplanted to bigger areas specially prepared for this purpose & set in rows at a distance of four feet or more from one another. Young plants are to be watered regularly at this stage. The tea field has to be weeded & much care be taken to protect the plants from the pests of insects & worms. When the plants begin to grow, they are pruned every now & then. When the plants are about three years old, their leaves are taken off for use.
The green & young leaves of tea plants are plucked several times a year. Then the leaves are dried in the sun. They are then crushed. Again they are dried in a hot room. Thus different qualities of tea are made. Some tea plants have two leaves & a bud. It is the best quality of tea.
The importance of tea in our national economy is very great. We earn a good amount of foreign exchange every year by exporting tea.
